English education in Kindergarten Sluníčko - Montessori
Kindergarten in Brno, Lesná, Šrámkova Street 14 has been running a class with enhanced English education for more than 10 years. In the preschool age, a child goes through a sensitive period for adopting a foreign language, and therefore it is very important to choose a quality school which can give the child everything they need and furthermore it prepares them for following language education over the course of their life. The concept of the class is build on entertaining and natural form of acquainting children with foreign language, breaking of barriers and fear of spoken word and communication which is most essential for future active knowledge and usage of the language. Children naturally adopt foreign language as a part of everyday life, therefore the very common fear of communication we know as adults, falls off. The aim of preschool education is not to teach the child to be fluent in English, but to obtain a positive relationship to this language which allows the child an easy future education. Children are in constant contact with English language. It is a part of thematic program, games, musical and motional blocks, but mainly, also part of everyday common communication according to the Montessori educational program. The communication is conducted in both languages. English is also included in daily activities through the medium of motional games connected with visualization, dramatization, songs and poems. The education also uses the medium of interactive materials. Children learn from the very beginning by observation, listening, and perception with primal understanding. Soon children start to react to these cues, answer and so a space for further development is created. The level of communication is individual and of course it is in accordance with the knowledge level of children, so that each child can achieve its own little personal victory in form of understanding and the ability to answer without the regard to age. Thanks to this, children build good foundations for later work with the language in contrast to previous generations discouraged and demotivated by learning vocabulary and grammar.
Montessori pedagogics puts strong emphasis on so called "sensitive periods" when the child is most likely to learn, or more precisely written "to absorb". In case of adopting language, this period starts around the second year and persists approximately to the seventh year of age of a child.
Longtime study in the area of language education showed that human brain is able to absorb two languages as easily as one. And what's more, there is no neurological stress. Recent researches of intelligence, mind creativity and ability to understand and comprehend show, while comparing bilingual and monolingual children, obvious advantages in educating bilingual children. After completing the tests in comparison group, children who learn 2 hours of second language a day in a playful form are as good at first language, but better at math.
Marie Montessori also studied by which manner children 'absorb' language without bigger effort, whereas adults have to work hard in language studies. A child who goes through sensitive period for learning human speech absorbs language, its phonetic patterns, vocabulary and grammar structure without any known effort. It is possible to learn tow or more languages without mutual disturbing.
